How to reflect on your year

10 questions to help you reflect on your past year and prepare for the next one

As 2022 ends and 2023 begins, it can be a great time to look back at what you have accomplished over the past 12 months, reflect on the past year and prepare for the next one.

Where have you been, what have you accomplished and what might you do differently? Additionally, you might also want to chart a course for your future goals.

So here are 10 questions to help you reflect on your past year and prepare for the next one.  I recommend you get out your trusty notebook, or open your app of choice, to write down your answers to the reflection questions.

Where did you succeed?

What are you most proud of from your achievements in the past year? Celebrating even the small wins is important.

What did you enjoy the most?

What are you passionate about? Whether it be your job or your relationships, make sure you are enjoying each and every day. If not, maybe it’s time for a change?

Where did you fail?

Looking at your own failures can be tough, but it is necessary. If you want to move forward, you must be honest about where you were not successful.

What regrets do you have?

This question can be painful to answer, but it can help you to achieve and thrive in the future.

What lessons did you learn?

Knowing and understanding what lessons life taught you this past year will help you to grow and be ready for similar situations in the future.

What will you do differently?

One thing you can control is yourself, so don’t blame others for your behaviour. Your attitude is a choice, make sure you choose a good one.

What is the status of your goals?

Review each of your goals and determine their status. Maybe you need to spend more effort on them, or even change them entirely.

What do you need to do more of?

What do you need to spend more time doing? Whether its simply being more organised or spending more time with family, it’s important that you set the intention.

What do you need to stop doing?

Maybe you have a bad habit. Try replacing negative behaviours with new positive ones.

What are your new goals for the new year?

Reviewing and revising your goals is an important exercise. Your new goals may be entirely new, or they may be modifications of existing ones. Your goals should be adaptable and you should always be course-correcting to stay on target to success.
